Acidification Monitoring

Acidification monitoring occurs throughout the Southeast, and across the world, through several different methods, including stationary sensors on moorings, piers, and buoys. Much of this raw data is publicly available through NOAA's OneStop data download site. Even more data, including pH can be accessed through the National Estuarine Research Reserve System Data Management Office.

Monitoring acidification means that we are constantly collecting data observations of the different parameters that impact the pH and carbonate mineral saturation state of the water. The four main variables that can be measured to monitor acidification are the CO2 absorbed into sea water, the total concentration of dissolved inorganic carbon components, free Hydrogen ions, and total alkalinity, which is a buffering agent against the decrease in pH.

This list of sites represents some of the monitoring sites within the Southeast region. For more information, please contact SOCAN at socan@secoora.org.
